In the midst of a busy academic week before our first travel break, my Danish Language and Culture class found a moment to relax and enjoy the ballet. A cool aspect of the Danish Language and Culture classes is that we get to participate in cultural events outside of the classroom. Attending the Det Kongelige Teater (The Royal Theater) was our first event.
Denmark has a long tradition of ballet as an artistic mode of expression. The Royal Danish Ballet, originating from 1748, is one of the oldest ballet companies in the world – as is The Royal Danish Ballet School from 1771. The performance was called Dans2Go. Charlotte, my Danish teacher, jokingly described as a sort of sampler for non-ballet enthusiasts. My classmates and I were blown away by the performances. I was reminded that music and dance are powerfully a part of a universal language. Attending the Danish ballet will be an experience I will never forget.
